Can Onstar systems in vehicles call the police on a driver in Florida?
Answer: Yes, and I’ve had multiple cases—especially DUI cases—where people have actually been arrested. One case sticks out in my mind, where it was a single-vehicle accident, and the client hit a fixed object, I think it was a tree. And that automatically caused his Onstar to call into headquarters, and he was actually knocked unconscious for a little bit. The police got there, followed by the Florida Highway Patrol, and the next thing you know, he ended up getting arrested and charged with driving under the influence. And, but for the Onstar, he may not have gotten a DUI. Now in that case, he had some pretty significant facial injuries, so there’s a chance that the police ultimately would have been called anyway. But, in that exact situation, he can attribute the DUI to Onstar. Not to mention the fact that he was probably under the influence, but more importantly, Onstar’s the one that alerted the police to come.
