Florida is known across the world for its beaches, sunny climate, and theme parks. It is also known for a popular joke on the internet – ‘Florida Man.’ This concerns weird crime headlines containing the phrase ‘Florida Man.’ The high prevalence of these headlines is partially a result of Florida’s freedom of information laws which allow journalists to access a lot more than other states. But, it is not only weird crimes that occur in Florida. There are many strange laws as well. Here are some weird laws that exist in the State of Florida, which you may want to be aware of, as well as some commonly spread myths.
Whilst you may not find yourself impacted by these particular laws, if you are in need of a Sarasota criminal defense lawyer or a Sarasota personal injury lawyer, then contact The Law Place today! Call us at (941) 444-4444 for your free consultation.
It Is Illegal for a Woman to Fall Asleep Under a Hair Dryer at a Hair Salon
According to laws in Florida, women who fall asleep under a hairdryer may be fined. On top of this, a salon owner can be fined for this offense as well. Therefore, if you’re feeling extremely cautious, keep yourself (or your customers if you are a salon owner) entertained whilst at the hair salon.
It Is Illegal to Roll a Barrel Down the Street in Pensacola
If you are caught rolling a barrel down the street in Pensacola, then you may be fined. Interestingly, this fine will depend on the contents of the barrel, so if you feel that you absolutely have to roll a barrel down the street, make sure you check what’s in it first.
The Punishment for Horse Theft Is Still Listed as Death by Hanging
This punishment is still written in the law. However, as it is a cruel and unusual punishment (under the Eight Amendment), it is no longer enforceable. It is now punishable by up to five years in prison and up to a $5,000 fine, according to Florida Statute 812.014.
You Cannot Park at an Intersection
Unlike other Florida laws, this law is not strange for what it is enforcing, but more so the fact that it has to be enforced in the first place. Florida Statute 0316.1945 clarifies you cannot park your vehicle at an intersection, or you may be issued a ticket. Hopefully, however, you will not park your vehicle at an intersection, not because you do not want to get a ticket, but because it is extremely dangerous.
It Is Illegal to Sing in a Swimsuit
If you’re planning on doing some karaoke on the beach, you may want to cover up first, as it is illegal in the State of Florida to sing in a bathing suit. Fortunately, this law is generally not applied, so feel free to sing in whichever articles of clothing you happen to be wearing.
It Is Illegal to Sell Oranges on the Side of Miami Beach
If you’re planning on starting an orange-selling business, make sure not to set it up on the sidewalk at Miami Beach, or you could risk up to 30 days in jail. This is provided for in Section 70-5 of Miami’s ordinances.
Unmarried Women Parachuting on Sundays Can Be Fined
If you are a woman, not married, and want to be extremely cautious, it would be best to avoid partaking in any parachuting on Sunday. The punishment for this activity is a fine and/or jailing. Fortunately, this law is no longer applied – but is still written in law. There is no such restriction for the opposite gender, though, so there is nothing to stop men from parachuting on Sunday.
Men Cannot Wear Strapless Gowns in Public
Whilst men are not stopped from parachuting on a Sunday, they are prohibited from wearing a strapless gown in public. However, while men may not wear a strapless gown in public, there is nothing stopping them from wearing another style of gown.
You Cannot Hang Your Clothes From a Clothesline in Cape Coral
According to Cape Coral’s ordinances, you cannot hang your clothes to dry outside on a clothesline. Make sure you have space inside your house or a dryer so that you do not have to choose between damp clothes and the law.
In Tampa, It Is Illegal to Eat Cottage Cheese After 6 pm on a Sunday
If you happen to have a craving for cottage cheese after 6 pm on a Sunday in Tampa, it may be best to find another type of cheese to eat. It seems to be unknown as to why this law exists, but if you want to be cautious, you may want to eat your cottage cheese in private on a Sunday evening.
Skateboarding Without a License Is Illegal
Whilst this is often stated to be among the weird laws in Florida, it is not true – you do not need a license to ride your skateboard in Florida. This is because skateboarders are considered to be pedestrians. You are, however, prohibited from riding your skateboard in a police station in Miami.
You Cannot Tie Your Elephant to a Parking Meter Without Paying a Parking Fee
This is another ‘law’ often discussed by those looking at strange laws in Florida. However, like the ‘law’ discussed above, this is also untrue. It likely comes from a more local law from many years ago, but there is no trace of it in the law today. Therefore, if you happen to be in a situation where you have to tie your elephant to a parking meter, then you will not have to pay a fee. Although, you may have to worry about the fact that you have to tie an elephant to a parking meter in the first place.
