Why have you chosen to focus so much of your time and training on DUI science and helping those charged with DUI in Florida?
Answer: Because DUIs are based on science. Field sobriety tests are very subjective in nature. A lot of people when being prosecuted or judged by a jury is based on a chemical result, whether it’s a drug test or whether it’s an alcohol level, and whether that alcohol level is done on a breath test machine or on a blood test, through blood alcohol testing, the case really hinges on the scientific analysis. And somebody’s performance on a field sobriety test, that could easily be explained—that can easily be subjective opinion by one person who can view it one way and another person can view it a different way. But a number is something that people pretty much view the same way. But that number has to be based on valid science. So, in order to convict somebody of a DUI, the science better be foolproof. And it better be done the right way—that’s why it’s important for us to have an understanding of it.
